I had the pleasure of studying with Adam Davis during my sophomore year of college while he was a DMA candidate at the University of North Texas (UNT). Having just come off a summer of performing in a world-class drum corps front ensemble, I imagined my marimba lessons would be a piece of cake, but they were anything but that. A humble teacher, Adam pushed me more musically than any other professor I had had. Our lessons rarely revolved around technical details or learning notes, but rather we focused our time on taking the literature, and as he would say “playing it the best it has ever been played”.

In our semester together, we focused on the Bach prelude and fugue in B flat major. He was a genius in helping me explore the different articulations I could achieve on marimba, and just how many different ways I could create a phrase. Despite how much I prepared, I was always amazed in my lessons with the insightful musical critiques Adam could make, and of course when he did play, just how good he sounded. Studying with Adam was breath of fresh air in my musical education that developed me not only as a technical player but also as a musician. A professional, passionate teacher, I would highly recommend Adam to any serious percussionist looking to make serious improvement.
